Hi, I have a Macbook 2.4 GHZ running OS X 10.5.2. I have had Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac for about 4 months and it now refuses to launch and I am requested to relaunch and of course when I do it fails and I get the report below. I did notice that I could not find the Word application in the application folder. I don't think I have done anything differently except that I often have to stop my computer from automatically searching and downloading the latest and very large update files. If anyone knows how I can get Word back and running, I would most grateful. All the applications in Office seem to work. If so, try this: 1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer, and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply 'Normal' and has no extension. 3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have moved it, it should be in /Users/ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My Templates/ 4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them: /Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10) /Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11) User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!) 5) Now re-start Word 2008 and it should be OK. Be thorough with this, if you leave any of these files behind Word 2008 will find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct a new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.

Hi Clem - Have you been using TimeMachine to back up? If so now is a good time to restore Office to its former self before proceeding. If not we'll try for the brass ring. Keep your fingers crossed:-) Not chastising - Just informing: The most likely cause of the problem is: 'I often have to stop my computer from automatically searching and downloading the latest and very large update files' In fact, I'm almost 100% certain that the reason the crash report shows the Version as???(???) is the direct result of stopping one of the Office updates while it was in progress.

If you don't want to receive the updates immediately that's OK, but both the OS X Software Update & the Office AutoUpdate programs can be set to be run manually. Even if set to run Automatically you can still decline any downloads until you're ready to receive them, but don't stop them once they start. Many people prefer to manually download updates late at night or very early in the morning. When is up to you, but they need to be done. Updates to OS X & Office aren't issued simply because they're cute:-) They are issued to correct deficiencies, enhance performance and keep the software in tune with OS X. If you neglect to update you might as well plant a firecracker in your Mac. As you're now finding it's a lot better to.keep.

up than have to.catch. up:-) Anyway: To resolve the problem the first thing I'd suggest is that you visit the Apple Downloads site, retrieve the Leopard 10.5.4 COMBO Update and apply that - you're 2 OS revisions behind. You might also check to see if there are any hardware/firmware updates for your breed of Mac as well as any Security Updates you might have missed. Then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & shut the Mac down for a few minutes.

When you start up.do not. attempt to launch any of the Office programs.

Instead go to HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0 & run the Microsoft AutoUpdate program. Let it do its thing which will hopefully get your installation back up to date (12.1.2). I say 'hopefully' because what I see in the crash log suggests that the updater may not even be able to find the necessary components - perhaps you'll get lucky. If all goes well Repair Disk Permissions again, then restart before launching any Office programs. If the Office updater fails you'll have no alternative but to reinstall Office - but don't do so until you check back.

If it isn't done properly you'll be wasting your time. Let us know how you make out.
