The manual says that only Green drives can be used in My Book Studio II. But on the WD web site on Green drives, it says: “.Desktop drives are not recommended for use in RAID environments, please consider using for home and small office 1-5 bay NAS systems and WD Enterprise hard drives for rackmount and 5 bay NAS systems.” But on the WD web site on Red drives, it says: “Specifically designed and tested for small office and home office, 1-5 bay NAS systems, small media servers and PCs with RAID.” So it seems that WD is recommending Red drives over Green drives for RIAD. Can I use Red drives in My Book Studio II? Would it accept the Red drives or reject them? Got another message from WD Support.

“At this point we cannot confirm that the WD Red drives can be used in a My Book Studio II as we have not tested it out. Currently the confirmed models that can be used in a My Book Studio II is the green drives. You are able to use a 2TB drive or a 3TB drive if you wish.” So back to square one: not sure whether Red drives can be used or not.

If anyone has a Studio II and a Red drive, please plug it into the Studio II and see whether it is rejected. You can just insert one Red drive into Studio II and then use WD Drive Manager to inspect the status of that drive to see what the status is. If the status is not “rejected”, then it may be possible to use it. Drives which are not compatible would have a “rejected” status. Powered by, best viewed with JavaScript enabled.

I have a 1 TB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition. It worked as a stand alone drive for a while, using Firewire 800 to 400 cable. Yesterday I used it as a Time Machine drive. Took about 5 hours to back up 240 GB.

Today I had about three power outages. The WD drive has not worked over Firewire since. I have tried various suggestions involving powering down both drive and iMac and attempting to connect.

The Western Digital drive is not showing in Finder, System Preferences, or Disk Utility. As it is a triple interface, I was able to connect it via the slower USB. Drive contents are intact, and Time Machine backs up over USB. I tried both Firewire ports on my iMac. I connected my other Firewire drive to the iMac. It works, so that proves the iMac Firewire port is OK.

It is looking distinctly like the Western Digital My Book problem is either a faulty WD Firewire port, or possibly a faulty cable. I should have a chance to try a different cable over the weekend. I will also be able to try the drive on a different computer. That should establish where the problem is. I don't know any general way to force my iMac to search for a Firewire drive it simply does not see.

I've had a similar issue with my PPC iMac and a WD external drive, not being recognized after shut down/start up; appears the WD goes to sleep & firewire doesn't wake it up when restarting, even if you unplug/replug the firewire. My Solution: shut down the iMac, disconnect both the firewire & WD power supply, wait 5-10 minutes (for full bleed-down), restart the iMac until fully awake, put power on the WD, after 30 sec plug in the firewire, within a minute the Time Machine & SuperDuper! Volumes appear on the desktop.

Hope this helps. It is only for the Home or Studio version. They are the new ones. Go to the page. Find your drive in the list (My Book Home Edition or My Book Studio Edition). Download the files from the list that shows up.

The gauge works on the front again. No weird hanging of the computer so far that I have to unplug the drive. My computer also starts up much quicker now. Obviously the firmware update fixed something with the Firewire connection. So happy it's working now (fingers crossed). Hi, the same thing happened to the other day.

After having used it for just one day I turned both my iMac 2.4 and WD500gb off; when I turned them on again it didn't appear on the desktop any longer. It works if I plug it into my iMac 2.4 only via usb; neither firewire 800 nor 400 work. I tried the. thing on my old iMac 800 via firewire 400 and it works; the same thing with a Macbook. Now I've taken it back to local reseller and don't know whether taking another one or a Lacie, providee that they let me to replace it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
