Separate Forum For Mac
Dec 3, 2016 - Support Forum. Install current version in a different location. Installing multiple versions on Mac OS X is basically dragging the Firefox.
The suggestion's been made before a while back. We even had a Mac specialist moderator for a while who mysteriously disappeared. Moderator DrBrooks is a Mac user and in a relatively short time has racked up tons of posts with useful information for Mac users like you and me. And the Doc has spent lots of time literally researching on behalf of people on the forum, so don't pass him up. Trust me, it's better now for Mac users on this forum than it has ever been before.
Feb 25, 2014 The new Mac Pro has different design, No Pci cards, No Nvidia cards, different drivers, different bootcamp requirements, different tweaks and these things are not backwards compatible to the old mac pro. Having it all in one forum under 'Mac Pro' is, in my opinion messy and can lead to misinformation for people that come to look for advice. Would it be a good idea to create a different Photos library that I can toggle back and forth from to keep these shots separate from my main.
If it's a Mac-specific topic, most people posting say so in the subject line. But if you see how many categories this forum is already broken down into, postings are often not made in the appropriate category anyway. Bugs, MIDI topics, driver issues, sound cards.
The topics are there, but posts in those topics are often left in General Discussions anyway. So a Mac-only forum might not be such an advantage. MAC: Comprimise OK, how do you all feel about a comprimise. I didn't create a seperate Mac sub-forum because of the same opinions already expressed here in this thread.
So, what I propose, is that instead of creating a seperate sub-forum, the person who starts a new thread states in the subject line that the thread is aimed at the Mac users by doing exactly what I did in the subject line of this post of mine. It makes everything so much simpler, and, I can go back to all previous posts and edit the subject line to have the ' MAC.' So that it makes it very easy to pick out which threads are from and for Mac users. Does this make sense, and can we all agree on this? That sounds like a lot of work, Hobbes, & frankly I think it's good the way it is. It's not like the volume is so huge that we're swamped with platform-specific stuff that's no use to the other side. I'm on a Mac, but I read PC stuff too, for example.
A lot of stuff has some overlap. And why label Mac, not PC, anyway? There's a very large percentage of Mac users here- certainly many times larger than the market in general- bet it's pushing 40-50% here. So it's nice maybe to give a hint in the title, but I wouldn't want to burden you or others with the job of deciding every time where something fits. There simply aren't that many posts here. Why add the burden?

I say it ain't broke. Vote NO on segregation!!! I agree with kimhill and others who don't want segregation.
Part of the beauty of forums like this is cross-pollinating ideas between people who otherwise might not meet. The PC and Mac versions are not so different anyway.
Stricter policing of subject line accuracy would be a better use of our valiant moderator's time. How about MANDATORY signature line system specs? That would be really helpful. And don't do ANYTHING without an accurate poll of how many forum members use PC vrs MAC!
Separate Forum For Mac Users
I'm sure quite a few bugs were squashed for both platforms after being found in just one version of the app. How would one platform's users ever know to look for some of the unique bugs that we have all found and killed on our respective platforms?
In fact, I wouldn't doubt if NI has kept the MAC version so PC-looking for this very reason. The more similar they are, the easier it is for them to do QA.
(I wouldn't doubt if there's only one codebase anyway, since the Mac version looks so PC-ish and lacks all those nice Mac interface goodies!) And finally, if a split did happen, it should only affect the bug reporting forum. Not general forums like tips and tricks. Vote no on the Scarlet Letter!
My wife and I currently keep our full resolution photos on our respective MacBooks, but this has gotten to be too much data to keep storing on our internal SSDs. So we want to move our personal Photos.app libraries to a shared Mac mini, where they will be stored on one very big external hard drive, which itself is backed up to two Time Machine drives that take turns being offsite backups.
We will most likely use either Photo Stream or ICloud Photo Library to get new photos onto the mini. In either case, I believe this means that we need to run two separate user accounts on the mini, each one staying logged in at all times, with the Photos.app running. But how do I force both user accounts to reopen automatically at system boot, for example after a power outage? With Photo Stream in particular, failing to reopen the second user account for too long could lead to lost photos.

I’m not saying it’s likely, but I can imagine not noticing, or forgetting, when the second account needs to be logged in manually. Alternatively, is there a way to keep both Photos libraries automatically syncing, from a single user account on the Mac? (This is in no way about merging two photo libraries into one, a popular topic I find when googling.). Good question,.

Your thought process is valid here, and using two user accounts on that Mac mini would be necessary, for sure. Getting one account to auto-login is no problem, of course. It's the second one that would be an issue. I'm curious if other members have answers here (and we'll add this topic to an upcoming MGG, too). Also, I don't think you'd need Photos actually running for iCloud Photo Library to sync. I believe that does its syncing with background processes regardless of whether Photos is running.
But I do believe that the user needs to be logged in for that to begin.
