Uninstall the previous game(the vanilla-original version I get to presume) and, with a utility software app., make sure it cleans out all registry entries of your previous installation of that, specific, game, of your current-in-use Operating System. Removes all directories and junk files-like left-overs and, then, defragment your HDD(IObit SmartDefrag v.3.x is my recommended app). Install your new retail or digital copy of Civilization V-Complete Edition.

While the installation process happens, it will, probably, ask you, if you want Steam to update your current copy. Then, fully register your copy(probably asked to be done, before the update is done). Much later on, when you will update-upgrade(change for a newer one) your PC, all you will have to do is: Download and install the Steam Client and let it update itself and, then, go to the Civilization game page(hub) and click onto the Play button to automatically redownload and auto. Install the newest copy of the online available digital copy of that, specific game.

Hope that answers this very common question. And, there are no shortcuts at doing so, either.;). Couple things on that: 1. Whether or not a 'utility software app' is used, manually removing the remaining game files after uninstall is the only sure way to make sure there won't be corruption or conflicts. I have yet to see troubleshooting issues with this game related to corrupted registry entries, although I am not saying it can't happen. When you say remove all directories, it's important to explain that there are two directories to remove. One is in the SteamApps Common Folder and one is in Documents My Games.

Removing game files while keeping corrupt settings and cache files won't fix a thing. Defragmenting will do nothing to fix errors in the game. It is possible it will boost performance, that's it. Steam will not ask you to update.

It will do that automatically. If you are installing through Steam, there will be no update at all, as it will download the current version. Only a retail copy will ask you to register, before it begins to install. This is a one-time activation of the game key to a Steam account. Once the key is activated, future installs through Steam won't need to register. If this is about upgrading from a previous version to complete, these steps are unnecessary.

Simply registering the new key in the Steam client will cause the DLC to automatically download, no reinstallation required. @Ragan: For me a DLC is an Add-On Pack to the game. Therefore, you should know, already, by now, that Civ.

V- Complete has all of these DLCs already included in that compounded Edition. I had no DLCs to install nor, were downloaded and auto. Installed by Steam.

The current version of Civ. V is called: Civilization V: Brave New World. The rest are Mods to download and auto. Install and, activate or deactivate the DLCs at your own leisure.

And, I meant that, in the near or distant future, the need to replace his/her PC system will become a necessity. Now, the game is no longer installed. Years have passed and, all you need to do is Dowload/install the Steam Client and then, re-install the digital edition of the game by clicking on the Play button. For first timers, that Play button is not there. And, the Steam Client's database has no idea of the game being owned + existing in the person's belongings. Of Windows, no matter its version or edition name, has this nagging habit of recalling the existance of previously existing data on the HDD's clusters of the current partition.

The defragmentation and optimization of it is now, an obligation. Rewriting current and pertinent data files into these previously used clusters will, ultimately eradicate, these deleted/erased files. That is also, the reason why, a different partition, called D: is generally used for backups and recovery images of both Windows files and its dated configurations. Just for your own studies, you can copy this post and paste it in your favorite word processing app. For saving + printing it whenever you feel like it.;).
