Hi Robin, Did you try using the backup header? Click on mount options and check the corresponding option before mounting. A crash alone doesn't make a drive unusable. Mount information are encoded in the header at the begining of the drive and at its end and these part of the drive are never touched by VeraCrypt after the drive is mounted. So, since the drive is not recognized anymore, either: another application has written data to the drive making it corrupt.
Once VeraCrypt is installed, open your Start menu and launch the “VeraCrypt” shortcut. Click System > Encrypt System Partition/Drive in the VeraCrypt window to get started. You’ll be asked whether you want to use “Normal” or “Hidden” system encryption. The Normal option encrypts the system partition or drive normally.
Usually in this case, the backup header helps. The flash memory is dead or at leat parts of it are dead making the flash memory unusable.

This is rare but it does happen. Also here, the use of the backup header should help since it is present at the end of the drive so the probability of having both the beginning and the end of the drive corrupted is very low.
Does the backup header helps? Sorry about the confusion.I thought you were under Windows:-( sometimes I read posts too quickly especially when there are so many other posts to answer. On MacOSX, mounting using backup header is not implemented by you can achieve a similar result using the menu 'Tools - Restore Volume Header'. So, select you drive using 'Select Device' button and then click on the menu I cited above and the choose 'Restore the volume header from backup embedded in the volume'. Does this work? By the way, what does your sentence 'The drive does not show up in the list of available devices' mean?
Are you talking about the dialog displayed by the button 'Select Devices'? Just to confirm, are you clicking on the button 'Mount' or the button 'Auto-Mount Devices'? Not a problem!
I appreciate your help. Unfortunately this doesn't work either. I can not select the flash drive as it is not recognised by Veracrypt. When I click 'Restore Volume Header' I get prompted to select a device - which I can't because it's nowhere to be found. All other USB devices of mine are working just fine. I used the regular 'Mount' button before.
Now I tried the 'Mount all devices' button, which is the one you mean by 'Auto-Mount-Devices' I suppose?! - after running for a good while I got the error message 'Wrong password or no VeraCrypt devices found:(. Thank you for your feedback.
So, the issue is on MacOSX side who has issue detecting the USB hardware. If I understand correctly, MacOSX Disk Utility doesn't see the USB drive?
Since the drive work on Windows, it should be detected on MacOSX since such detection has nothing to do with the file system or the drive content and so encryption can't affect this. Anyway, this is not an issue in VeraCrypt.
